I finally had the perfect dog walk!
We drove from Colorado to Minnesota for my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday.
It gave us the opportunity to take Rowan along with us and spend some great time with family.
It was also a surreal dog walking experience for me.
- Imagine getting to walk your reactive dog - without seeing or hearing another dog during your entire walk!
- Imagine walking your prey-driven dog for 45 minutes - without seeing a single rabbit, squirrel, or other chase-inducing critter!
- Imagine walking your boy - who loves responding to pee-mail - and having them walk past multiple trees, bushes, mailbox posts, and more without the constant urge to mark!
It felt kind of like a “twilight zone” for me, completely different from my usual “paranoid dog mom “ frame of mind.
I wasn’t really sure what to do when I wasn’t constantly checking for open fence gates, loose dogs, or other potential signs of danger.
I’m so used to having my head on a swivel that it took me time to relax and just enjoy our walks!
Since we’ve returned home, I’ve been setting aside one weekday morning every week to drive somewhere that we can walk without needing to worry about loose dogs or reactive dogs.
This small weekly change has been making a huge difference in my stress levels, and is definitely enriching for Rowan.
Now close your eyes and imagine what your perfect dog walk looks like?
What does it look like? How does it feel? What is it like to walk calm and relaxed for a change?
Please tell me about it!
I would love to hear how your dog walks are going, and what you envision instead?
Let's work together and help you enjoy more stress-free walks in your life too!
